This DIPLOMADO DE ESPECIALIZACION EN CASOS DE INMIGRACION is five-week course that covers all aspects of the immigration experience. After a brief overview, authentic documents are shared for retaining terminology in context and practice all interpreting skills: sight translations in both directions, consecutive interpretation, and simultaneous interpretation. Whatever your years of interpreting experience, you will learn the new and practice the old.

Below is a copy of our first announcement:

Interpreting Immigration Cases & Appeals. A Five-Part Online Diploma Course. Wednesdays, October 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, 2024 – 8:00 to 9:30 pm EDT.

This October we turn toward what it means to interpret and translate for immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and undocumented migrants. Over five weeks, Dr. Varela will guide you through this challenging landscape.

We will use authentic documents and videos to easily acquire terms and vocabulary in context, to scale our sight translation and interpreting skills, and to find the resources we need to perform at our best professional level.

Each class is an hour and 30 minutes long and includes documents and exercises to be done throughout the week. Please join us in real time, via Zoom, each Wednesday in October at 8:00 pm EDT.

REGISTRATION DETAILS

Tuition is $129 by September 30, 2024 and $149 later. As part of your registration, you will receive a companion text for this course, Interpreting Immigration Cases & Appeals, a $49 value, class notes, and a Diploma of Specialization.

If you have questions about this course, please kindly reach out to us at josevarelaibarra@spanishshield.com

INSTRUCTOR

José León Varela-Ibarra, PhD, is a Federal, State, and ALRB Certified interpreter coach. He created and taught graduate courses in translation and interpreting at The University of Texas, Brownsville, San Diego State University, Imperial Valley, FIU, UWI Barbados & Brazil. He has conducted training programs for federal exam candidates coast to coast, as well as in Mexico & online. With Dr. Dagoberto Orrantia years past, he co-led a training program for all Texas immigration interpreters. He now lives in Kentucky with his dog Mocha and Latino immigrants & asylum seekers, whom he serves pro bono.

NOTA BENE

If you are only seeking credits: Learning for learning’s sake lasts longer than taking a class for CEUs or CIMCE. That is why the only approval we seeks is from the hundreds of colleagues we have trained. But knowing that  interpreters in some states really need credits, we recommend at https://castillolanguageservices.com/ the excellent courses provided by our NAJIT colleague Javier Castillo.
